Savitri, the beautiful daughter of King Aswapati of Madra Desa selected Satyaban as her life partner. Satyaban, a prince in exile who was living in the forest with his blind father Dyumatsen. Post marriage, Savitri left the palace and started to live in the forest with her husband and the in-laws. As a devoted wife and daughter-in-law, she used to take care of them with great lengths. One day while cutting wood in the forest, Satyaban’s head reeled and he fell down from a tree. Savitri accompanied him on that day. Then Yam raj, the God of death, appeared there to take away his soul. Deeply hurt, Savitri pleaded to Yam raj not to be separated from her husband. Savitri follows Yama as he carries the soul away. Savitri ran after him, and pleaded with Yama either take her along with him to the Yamlok or give back the life of Satyaban. Yam raj replied, “Your time has not yet come, child. Go back to your home”. But Savitri insisted on accompanying her husband to the Yamlok. She also tried with all her logic to convince him and repeatedly requested him for her husband’s life. The God of Death turned down her request every time, still she followed him with a hope. Finally, Yamraj agreed to give her three boons but not the life of Satya ban. Savitri with a ray of hope requested for his blessing for her in laws and was granted. The third boon was that she made a wish to be the mother of hundred sons and the Yam raj agreed. Savitri informed him that it is impossible. As a Sati, she can’t take another husband. Yama raj moved by the devotion of Savitri, returned the life of her husband. Satya ban came to life again and both of them lived happily thereafter. Savitri Brata is observed by married Hindu women in eastern India for their husband’s long life. This occasion falls in every year Jyestha month krishna pakhsa Amavyasa night (Dark night). From astrology point of view these happens when the king (sun) and the queen (moon) are in brishava (Taurus) sign. Venus is the ruling Planet. Though moon is in exaltation sign but both sun and moon are weak. So Yama (Saturn ) and Amavasya (Lord rahu) took the charge of the day. In eastern part of India women worship silpua(stone) on this day. In Bihar and Nepal, women usually worship peepal tree with thread. As per some text stone belongs to Saturn and peepal tree belongs to Saturn Rahu and Jupiter. Worshiping Saturn and lord Rahu in this day gives us long lasting love and relationship . All married women use red vermillion on the forehead, which is elongated to touch the line parting the hair. This is again represents mars; in Vedic astrology our first house represents mars. Mars also has life force. It gives us energy to anything and everything for love. Taurus is the house of Family, Saving, Resources, wealth, Eyes, Longevity of the Husband (as 8th house from 7th house), so affliction to these houses can be troublesome. Whosoever has this affliction, can go for remedial action as mentioned above. As Osho said: People say love is blind because they do not know what love is. I say unto you, only love has eyes, other than love, everything is blind.
